Fraser Salmon and Watersheds Program
The CCCS began working with the FSWP in 2008, receiving three grants in total. Two of these grants supported the development of our Watershed Health and Conservation Education (Water Wise) program and a half-year grant assisted in the fulfillment of a Sustainability Coordination Program within the Cariboo Region, started with a number of Cariboo Chilcotin Beetle Action Coalition grants from 2007. The staff support and funding flexibility in these grants was exceptional, and may be credited for the success of these programs.
City of Williams Lake
The City of Williams Lake has been a supporter of the CCCS’s Water Wise program (from InKind to current Fee for Service) from the onset in 2006. In 2010 a partnership with the City on a waste-reduction education program - Waste Wise - was initiated by the City of Williams Lake. The CCCS Sustainability Coordinator program worked with the City on sustainability issues from 2008 – 2010. Having this local support of environment-friendly education by a municipality is to be commended.
W. Garfield Weston Foundation
The W. Garfield Weston Foundation is a private Canadian family foundation. A Foundation was first established in the 1950s by Willard Garfield Weston and his wife Reta, with their shares in the family company, George Weston Limited. Donations from the Foundation are directed to specific organizations in the fields of education, land conservation, and science in Canada's North. In addition to its ongoing commitments, the Foundation makes a number of unsolicited, Trustee Initiated Grants each year. The Weston Foundation funds received by CCCS were the unsolicited type, and have been used in the areas of Outdoor Education (Gavin Lake modules) and Water and Waste Wise classes and field trips in the Cariboo region. The Weston Foundation funding came at a time when CCCS most needed it, and we are very grateful for this honour and recognition.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada
CCCS began working with Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) staff on a Volunteer Interior Coho Trapping project in the early 2000s. Throughout this period DFO staff donated considerable in-kind time assisting us in the process of trapping and recording data on salmonid fry in the streams of our region emptying into the Fraser River. From 2006 CCCS has received repeat funding in support of our watershed education programs and salmonid awareness projects. The DFO Community Advisors have been extremely helpful and supportive of our efforts and CCCS staff worked on the Provincial Stewardship workshop held in Williams Lake in 2008, bringing stewards together from across the Province in celebration of salmon and watershed stewardship.
Pacific Salmon Foundation
A lifetime member of PSF, CCCS has received several grants assisting us in the creation of educational materials and products (our famous giant Salmonid Sister Suits) that have assisted us in drawing attention to our area's salmonid population and concern for their welfare. In 2009 CCCS received the PSF award for Best Community Salmon Program Final Report received in 2009!
Cariboo Chilcotin Beetle Action Coalition
Beginning in 2005 support was received from the CCBAC for an Identification of Large Areas relatively Unimpacted by existing Development in the Cariboo-Chilcotin for Temporary Retention mapping project . Following this, CCBAC supported the development of the Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Strategy, and following one of the recommendations funded the first year of a Sustainability Coordination program for the region, allowing for meaningful linking between the regions three main centres on sustainable initiatives. The networking and significant importance of liasoning with ‘like’ communities was an important first step. CCCS is grateful to have been apart of this, with funding support for two annual forums (work continued with FSWP funds, see above.)
